Glossary

Badly – Badly refers to the process of taking text in English and running it through multiple rounds of Google translation, going from one language, to another, to another, and so on, finishing with Finnish, and then back to English.

Barney Google – Barney Google is a comic strip character created by Billy DeBeck in 1919 that also appeared in the 1923 hit song “Barney Google (with the Goo-Goo-Googly Eyes)”. The song entered the public domain on January 1, 2019, and Etc Kid performed the song during his Public Domain Day show. We often refer to the search engine Google and Google’s translation software as Barney Google.

Calp – On Nov 29, 2016 @domdude64 typed “Clap Calp Kreygasm” in chat. Since then “Calp” is the main way chat claps after a song, either with the emote or calp puns like Alcalpa or Calpifornia.

Etceterati – The Etceterati is a name for our chat community.

Honor the Silence – When Kid designed his text to drum loop software, he forgot to set it up to work with numbers, so whenever a username has numbers in it, the generator leaves silence wherever there are numbers. “Honor the Silence” is a request by chat for Kid to leave the silence and not replace it with a sound, which sometimes Kid honors and sometimes doesn’t.

Keep it Jamesin’ – ‘James’ is equivalent to ‘Jams’ and came out of a typo in a @cbeckmusic message on October 27, 2016, “thanks for the james”.

Raw – Keeping a drum loop ‘raw’ means using the loop exactly as the drum generator created it, not adding any notes, or changing the note velocities.

Thank you, Dr. Koala – This phrase is typically used when being sarcastic or ironic. It was originally created from a #band generated by Tooby and badly translated by Barney Google, as part of a #bandBadly gifted from @w_a_t_c_h_ to @mutants_molded_my_morals on July 3, 2019. The full sentence where it made its first appearance was “Thank you, Dr. Koala, and give the children early injuries.”

Tooby – Tooby is the nickname of our channel’s bot ToBeOrNotToBot.
